The win pushed Malkia to fourth on the group with three points with two matches to play

Africa's women volleyball heavyweights Malkia Strikers of Kenya beat arch-rivals Cameroon by straight sets (25-20, 27-25, 25-19) to keep their hopes of progressing past the group stage at the FIVB World Championships in the Netherlands alive.

Malkia opened their campaign with back-to-back defeats to hosts Netherlands and later Belgium at the Geldredome Arena, losing on straight sets in both matches but made amends when it mattered.

This was Kenya's second victory ever at the FIVB Women's World Championship, and perhaps it would mean much more if they manage another win in either of their remaining two matches to progress.

Sharon Chepchumba was at her best in the game and emerged as the top scorer in the end with 18 points, picking up where she left with her 13 points against Belgium, followed by her teammate Veronica Adhiambo who contributed to 12.

The Luizomar de Moura-coached side was ferocious on the attack, picking most of their points from that and forcing their opponents to err more.

With the win, Kenya is fourth in Pool A with three points and faces Italy next on Thursday, then wraps up the group action against Puerto Rico on Saturday.
